1080 BC

The year is 1080 BC. We are the nation of Yasutan (Mongolia to the outside universe). We have founded 2 cities and have a settler ready to plant the third. France is close by on the W, Rome far to the NW and Germany somewhere vaguely N.

Welcome to Yasutan!

Today our citizens have finally decided the name our civilization will bear during our ages of prosperity. In the second poll concerning this subject, 40% of the citizens voted for “Yasutan”, so that will be the name of our civ. Falcon02 will have the honour of naming our civ in-game. This will happen on Friday the 23th (2100 GMT).

CFNN Launched!

Hey every one, the Civfanatics News Network has been launched. We’ll (which is currently just I, feel free to get in touch with me if you want to help out.) be trying to create a simulation news website that will report the news of this simulated civilization. We’ll need help from you citzens to, so get in character. Send us a email about what you think about that brand new Painting by Da’vinci that just appeared in your town. Is it the most amazing thing to ever be put on canvas? Or is it horribly overrated? That sort of thing.

Working Draft of the Constitution

The plan for the ruleset we are going to use is to split it into two sections - the Constitution and the Code of Laws. The former will be a basic framework that can be used for all future demogames and won’t need to be changed. The latter will be very flexible to suit our needs. We can alter it the way we want it and define it how we want; the CoL will fill in the details that the Constitution set up.

So far, the Draft of the Constitution is almost done: all that is left is the Preamble (pretty much done) and the Judiciary text. The opinions of the citizens so far have been to just keep the Judiciary the same - it has worked in the past, so why fix it? Below you can get a link to the working draft of our Constitution. We hope to ratify it by December 1st, then work on the CoL, ratify that, and shoot for a January 1st starting date!

Civ4 Warmup Democracy Game

As a prelude to the real Civ4 demogame, we are starting a warmup democracy game. This way, we can easily learn more about the concepts in Civ4 and how they’ll apply to the rules without actually going head-on into a full demogame. The plan of this game, according to its founder DaveShack, is:

1. The objective of this quick game is to have fun playing Civ4 in a team decision environment, and to learn what things need to be decided as a team so the real Civ4 Demogame can have a sound organizational structure.
2. No playing ahead, obtaining information outside normal game play, altering game conditions after initial game creation, reloading to try to get better RNG results, or any other form of cheating is permitted.
3. A minimum of 24 hours (1 day) must pass between the end of one session and the beginning of the next.
4. A maximum of 72 hours (3 days) can elapse between the end of a play session and beginnign of the next. If the DP cannot accomodate playign within 72 hours then they must be skipped and the next DP selected.

Constitutional Discussion

As more and more people start to get Civ4, work has been starting on our ruleset. Five people, three ‘veterans’ and two ‘newbies’ to the demogame were elected by the people on November 2nd - they are the council who is in charge of writing the ruleset. They are the following:

Alphawolf (Newbie)
DaveShack (Veteran)
Ginger_Ale (V)
Harrier (N)
Nobody (V)

Their duty is to organize discussions and poll the citizens to determine what the citizens’ stances on issues are, and then collect those opinions into our Constitution. Discussions and polls are going up and will be up in the near future on key issues, so keep an eye on the forums!

Civ4 Game of Democracy

At last! Civilization 4 has been released. Along with its release is the start of the first Game of Democracy for Civilization 4. But, what exactly is a Game of Democracy? Read no further:

Simply put, a Game of Democracy, or demogame, is where a group of citizens play out a game of Civilization all together. They discuss various options on how to play the game and poll them, and subsequently play the game based on the input gathered from everyone. They elect cabinet members who hold offices regarding differing aspects of Civilization (military, foreign trade, domestic matters, etc.) who are in charge of gathering view points and opinions on specific matters relating to their office.

Ok, that is the Game of Democracy in a nut shell. If you are a member of CFC, just register in this thread and you can take part in this game! Below are some more in depth descriptions of various aspects of the demogame that tend to be confusing.

Turnchats

This is probably a very confusing part of the demogame. Turnchats are the times when the save is played, usually in alotments of 10 turns each. Now that we have covered the “turn” part, let’s move onto the “chat” part. Each time the save is played, the leader who plays the save does so publically in the CivFanatics Chatroom. More about that:

The link about is one way to get to the demogame (make sure you select “turnchat” as the channel instead of “civfanatics” — the latter is the general civfanatics chatroom. The former is the one dedicated to well, turnchats.). Another is to download a client like mIRC (free). At a specific time mentioned in a turnchat thread in the main demogame forum, the leader who plays out the turns as well as any citizens and officials are welcome to come to the chat as the leader plays out the save. As he does so, he will ‘log’ his actions in the chat (ie; city founded by sea, or worker finishes road).

Also, when the turnchat is underway, the leader will post in the turnchat instruction thread (where officials post instructions for the leader — referred to as a TCIT) a post containing the save (uploaded live as the turnchat progresses) as well as a chat log at the end of the turnchat for those that were not in attendence. Attendence is not compulsory - it is meant for enjoyment.

Turnchats are usually spaced no more than 1 week and no less than 3 days apart. Between this time, discussion takes place. Summaries of all turnchats will also be posted in this thread as well as screenshots in this one.

The Election Process

Every elected official (we will go over these later) is elected for a term; each term is 1 month in length. Starting 8 days before the term ends, nominations go up. In these threads, any citizen can nominate somebody else or themselves to run for a certain position (or multiple people). A person will have 3 days to accept/decline the nomination. Debates will also take place in the nomination threads, so feel free to ask questions to the nominees to determine their stance on issues to decide who you will vote for.

Once nominations are over, elections will go up. They last for 3 days as well. A poll (private) will be put up for people to choose a person to become that official of a certain department. The winner with the most votes will earn that position. If there is a tie, a run off will occur. There is a gap between the end of elections and the start of the new term - this allows the officials to create their department threads in the government forum and for citizens to get acquainted with them.

When the term is up, this whole process is repeated one more time!

Offices

To be updated as a constitution is written.

Citizen Groups

Citizen groups are just as the name implies - groups of citizens uniting for a specific cause. These causes will vary - maybe to collect all of one resource, to eliminate a certain type of civilization, to collecting 20000 gold by some certain date. Anybody can create one in the Citizens’ Forum; state your goal and idea, and have some members sign up. You can advocate your cause, convert other people, and make decisions in the game’s discussion based on this group’s goal. As a leader of a Citizen Group, be sure to make a post in the Citizen Group Registry to advertise your group to catch the eye of prospective members.

More will be added as we actually determine the game’s options! Come participate in the discussions:

Multi-Team Demogame

Ever wanted to play a Play by Email Game (PBEM), but you felt like it was too different from single player? Or maybe you didn’t want the game to die from people quitting, or you felt like you didn’t have enough time. This is the exact reason why the idea for a Multi-Team Demogame was formed. The basics of it are as follows: 4 teams for 5+ players each duke it out in a PBEM - each team elects its own officials, such as a President who plays the turns, or a Domestic Leader in charge of the build orders for each city. The leaders gather input from the non-elected citizen body and the President utilizes this when he receives the save game from the previous team. Each citizen has a say in their team, but they are not required to have any job besides discussing what their civilization should do. The 4 teams can sign alliances against one another, or declare war and invade another nation - diplomacy thrives with active humans, rather than boring, predictable AI. Be wary of your opponents who you consider to be allies - they could backstab you at any moment. If this sounds like fun to you, check out the links below - we are still in the signup and discussion stage. We are hoping to have an August start, for a transitional game to Civ4. All of this will hopefully take place in secret forums to keep cheating and troublemaking to a minimum. For anyone looking to improve their Civ3 skills (whether it be singleplayer or multiplayer) while having fun mimicking a nation and its opponents, we encourage you to sign up and enjoy this with us!

We are hoping for 5-6 players per team at a minimum - enough for discussion and activity, yet low enough to maintain a friendly atmosphere.

Demogame 6 is over!

In a recent turnchat led by Judiciary-appointed President Stuck_as_a_Mac, we gained enough tiles to win by domination. You can refer to this thread for the final pre-win save as well as post-game screenshots. Congratulations to all, and we hope you stick around for DG7!

Speaking of DG7, discussion for it is underway, taking place in the citizens’ forum. Important polls have gone up in the polls forum. We invite you to discuss the settings with us - your voice could make the difference in a series of close-knit polls. Right now, it looks like we will be doing a form of the 5 City Challenge variant (5CC) called a 5 Built City Challenge (5BC). This means we can only build 5 cities. From then on, the only way to acquire cities is by conquering them. And if the results hold steady, using cumulative voting in this thread, we will only be allowed to capture 7 additional cities (if we do a standard-size map). Come join us for this new and exciting twist to the demogame!

Our target start date is August 1st. Here’s to a successful DG7, a transition between Civ3 and Civ4! null
